Punch Needle

Patterns

Trace Creek Quilting has blended our love for quilting and punch needle to offer several quilt block punch needle patterns! Each digital pdf printable pattern comes with:

  • 8” x 8” square quilt block pattern ready for printing and tracing on your own needle punch fabric.

  • Printing percentage guides for printing the pattern 6” x 6”, 5” x 5”, and 4” x 4”.

  • Color palette suggestions

  • Information on the yarn used in the cover sample.

Just as many quilt blocks can be made with a variety of color placements, so can many these punch needle quilt blocks! Several of the patterns have multiple guides for where to place each color so one pattern can make several variations of each block. Check the description of each pattern to see how many variations it offers.

Tools

Everyone has their own preference on what supplies they use in their punch needle projects. Below I have listed some of the ones I find most helpful. At this time, TCQ is not in a position to offer any of these for sale so we’ve also listed some of the places we purchase our supplies.

Lavor Adjustable Punch Needle.
We love it because it is compact, fits our hands nicely, and the various lengths allows us to create fun texture in our final punch projects. With a quick search, these needles can be found for purchase online.

Monks Cloth, 12 holes per inch.
Most of the punch needle we do is with thicker yarns and monks cloth is a dream to work with. It secures loops and recovers well when we need to start over. Check the density when purchasing at local craft stores or online.

Oxford Needle.
This is a classic needle designed by Amy Oxford herself. It doesn’t require a stringing wire and is great for bulkier yarns. They can be purchased online and directly through The Oxford Company.

Morgan No Slip Hoops.
These hoops have groves in them securing the monks cloth so it stays tight as a drum as we punch through our patterns. I find mine at The Woolery and The Oxford Company.

Yarn.
While there are so very many different types of yard that can be used for punch needle, I’ve primarily used two. The first is Cascade Yarns Pacific Chunky. It is 60% Acrylic/40% Wool and comes in a decent variety of colors. It is #5 bulky. I purchase it from my local yarn shop. The second is Loops and Threads Acrylic. It is #4 medium in bulk and comes in colors that the Cascade Yarns does not. I can purchase this at my local big box craft store.

Inspirations and Tutorials

Below are a handful of the folks I visit when I need tutorials, inspiration, new patterns, guidance, supplies, etc. They are already doing things much better than I so no need to reinvent the wheel!

The Oxford Company - Amy Oxford wrote the book on punch needle, literally. Supplies, classes, tool designs….. Start here.
Punch Needle World - This site is great for history of the craft, community, tutorials, and patterns.
Whole Punching - Great for UK supplies, starter kits, etc. Has online patterns and classes for stateside folks as well as an excellent Instagram account.
The Urban Acres - Total punch needle fun and a great place to learn. Ruby Star Society patterns and excellent kits.
Kimberbell - Oh, my, goodness her patterns are CUTE.
The Woolery - Much more than punch needle, this site will supply you and inspire you in many ways.

This just scratches the surface. @storytellerwool, @themidnightcreative, and @bookhou are a few more I follow on Instagram who might inspire you as they inspire me!
